Colours come in and out of style all the time, and the colour that’s taking the world by storm this season is red. Deep, cherry red to be specific. Even our on-screen idols, like Lorelai Gilmore and Monica Geller are in on this trend. Both of these icons are known for their dark hair, quirky style and intense personalities. They both ooze a comforting familiarity and relatability that I can only aspire to have.

The Truth Behind Most Trends…

Luckily for you, this viral, vampy-red lip shade can be suited to basically ALL skin types with some minor tweaks. Not all trends work for every body, and that’s why you often end up thinking “ugh – why does this look sooo bad on me?” when you hop on a new trend. I don’t ever want you to spiral off into a self-hate trajectory. So, firstly, let’s remember that it’s not YOU who’s the problem, it’s the TREND itself. These trends thrive off of people who want to try something new or reinvent themselves.

Likewise, these trends are usually only trending because a highly-attractive, uber-wealthy human is flaunting it as the ‘next big thing’. We often forget that trends go viral due to the PERSON wearing the trend, not because it’s a versatile trend that includes every body. That’s why we end up buying into each trend, tying it out, and then feeling frustrated when we don’t feel like a new, better version of ourselves. It’s a clever, sneaky marketing trick that brands (and sometimes creators) use against us. But, if you know the secret is to pick and choose the trends wisely, you will most likely never run into an issue ever again. Okay, let’s actually move ON… You’re not here to listen to be babble on about manipulation and FOMO marketing.

Finding The Right Burgundy Shade For Your Skin Tone

If you’ve never tried to figure out your seasonal colour palette, I’d highly suggest giving that a try first. Once you figure out your colour palette, finding the right shade of red for this look will become ten times easier. In fact, finding your colour palette will change your life. I always wondered why bright whites never looked good on me, and that’s because they’re too harsh. The same goes with true blacks. They are way too aggressive for my softer tone. I thrive in colours that are muted and soft, to complement my cooler skin tone, soft brown hair and muted grey-green eyes. Which is why a muted (flat), neutral red will look best on me compared to a warm, orange toned red.

Why The Colour Season’s Aren’t 100% Trustworthy…

Take your colour season as a GUIDE – not a rulebook. There are many instances where a certain shade or colour has been axed from a colour palette for a particular season. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make it work…

Rihanna (top row, 3rd) is a great example of this. Her colour season is guessed to be a Clear Spring. But hang on, Clear Spring’s usually thrive in bright, light colours. A dark burgundy doesn’t make sense. But it WORKS. She looks stunning in a vampy burgundy shade. This is because the overall tone of her makeup can handle such a deep colour like burgundy.

Likewise, Hailey Bieber (second row, 1st) seems to be a True Autumn, a season where deep, warm reds are absolutely welcomed and encouraged, which makes complete sense, as she looks fabulous in that shade, too.

And all the pale models on the bottom look divine in a dark, vampy red lip. All of these models colour seasons are unknown, but instead of focusing on that, we can all recognise that they have different colours and contrasts to their overall look – and yet it works for all of them. This collection of images proves that a dark, burgundy red can be suited to every body.

The Secret To Making It Work For Everyone?

Don’t. Wear. Something. Contrasting.

Always keep makeup to a minimum. A soft, complementary dark eye could work well if you can handle some heaviness. But the rule of thumb is to dial it back and keep blush to a minimum. Notice how all the models above are sporting a minimal look and their lips are the attention-grabber?

Likewise, following this rule into your outfit can really help. Opt for whites or blacks, soft creams, dark browns or even a matching burgundy shade. It’s unlikely that a burgundy lip will pair well with neons, pastels or jewel tones. But, you do you. This is only a guide – not the gospel.

Lots of love, as always,
