Making These Beauty Routine Mistakes?
Small changes can have a big impact, so it’s really important that you’re using your products correctly. Especially if they’re expensive! Nobody likes wasting products or not getting enough bang for their buck. Follow the guide to ensure you are aren’t making these beauty routine mistakes!
Hair Care Mistakes
✘ Putting dry shampoo in your hair when you NEED to
Instead, use it before going to bed. That way you can avoid the white cast for my fellow brunettes. Likewise, the main reason for doing this is to allow the dry shampoo to absorb all the oils overnight. You’ll wake up with voluminous, refreshed hair. Thank me tomorrow!
✘ PUTTING SHAMPOO STRAIGHT ONTO YOUR HAIR
Instead, apply more than usual for your first wash, and emulsify it in your wet hands to create a foamy lather. This is what my hair stylist taught me! Your find your hair becomes cleaner much quicker as the foamy shampoo allows to break up the dirt and oils sitting on your scalp. With that being said, that brings me to my next beauty routine mistake…
✘ ONLY SHAMPOO-ING ONCE
Instead, your first shampoo will help break up and remove oils and dirt. Whether you’ve used a lot of product or not, shampooing twice is key to help thoroughly clean your hair. Your second shampoo (a double cleanse for your scalp!) will help clean your scalp entirely. You’ll notice on your second wash, the shampoo lathers up easier in your scalp. This is how it should be, hence why we double-cleanse our hair, too!
✘ APPLYING CONDITIONER ALL OVER YOUR HAIR
Instead, focus it on the end of your hair, below your ears. Conditioner is to help softer the ends of your hair and help them appear healthy. Therefore, applying a softener to your scalp can make some hair types look greasier. Opt for an oil pre-wash instead.
Skin Care Mistakes
✘ CLEANSING ONCE in the evening
Instead, double cleanse your skin and cleanse once in the morning. The evening time is when we need to clean our face more thoroughly as it’s been exposed to products like SPF, makeup and pollutants. No matter what, everyone should double-cleanse in the evening before going to bed. Read more about creating the perfect skincare routine for your skin type here!
✘ BRUSHING YOUR TEETH AFTER APPLYING SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Instead, brush your teeth first. That way you will be washing off any excess toothpaste when you being your skincare routine. Some people find that excess toothpaste can cause them to develop pimples around their mouth.
✘ APPLYING YOUR FOAMING CLEANSER DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR SKIN
Instead, wet your skin and hands before adding your foaming cleanser to your palms. Spend a few seconds foaming up your cleanser. This is called emulsifying – just like I mentioned above with shampooing. The same rule applies here. Ensure you wash your face for at least 30 seconds, but 60 seconds is better.
✘ ONLY WASHING YOUR FACE
Instead, take some time to thoroughly wash your jawline and neck, behind your ears and around your hairline. Products are appleid here too, and they’re often forgotten about. If you find pimples appearing in any of these places, ensure you wash those areas thoroughly from now on.
✘ APPLYING OIL-BASED AND BALM CLEANSERS TO WET SKIN
Instead, apply oil-based and balm cleaners to dry skin. Add your oil or balm to your hand and warm it up. This helps with the spreadability. Then apply directly to your face – dry. After the oils have broken down makeup, SPF, etc, you can add a bit of water to create a milky solution. Continue to gently cleanse for a few more seconds before rinsing away.
Habit Mistakes
✘ APPLYING PRODUCT APPLICATORS DIRECTLY TO YOUR SKIN
Instead, apply your products directly into clean hands – yes clean! As in, wash your hands before starting your skincare! his way you are reducing the risk of contamination. Applying applicators directly onto your skin is not a good idea. In fact, applying any applicator, such as a pump, doe-foot wand, pipette, etc is a fast-track way to infection your entire product. Just apply to your product to clean hands (for skin care) or the back of your clean hands (for makeup!)
✘ NOT WASHING YOUR PILLOW CASES OFTEN ENOUGH
Instead, ensure you are washing your pillowcases or swapping them out every few days. Pillowcases are great as harbouring bacteria, so make sure you’re being as hygienic as possible.
✘ using a dirty towel to dry your face on
Instead, use a clean one! I have 2 types of towels and I replace them every few days. One is a wash cloth for removing my cleanser from my neck and behind my ears, and the other is specifically for drying my face on. I’d urge you to start using a small wash cloth to dry your face separately from now on, especially if you suffer from acne and pimples!
✘ USING A DIRTY PHONE SCREEN
Instead, opt to disinfect your phone screen frequently. Make up, oils, dirt and other nasty things are sitting on your phone, and when you take a call, you’ll allowing all that to transfer to your cheeks. Use a spray and some kitchen roll or disinfectant wipes to sanitise your phone often, especially if you go to the gym!!!
